Candles

Remember blowing the candles out
Watching the smoke drift away
Feeling no different than the second preceding
Watching the numbers drift away
Feeling no different inside
Everyday is the same
Keeping the wolfs at bay
Where did all that time go
Life's habit of taking you
Where it will
Like that awkward dead air
Blowing the candles out
And watching the smoke drift and fade
Feeling no different from second before
Everyday the same
a repetitive masquerade
Watching the numbers drift and fade
Till that point when there is more past than future
Pulling the joker out of a deck of cards
His face looking so familiar
Knowing your out of the game
Watching the numbers drift and fade

And I remember finding nickels in the cake (after, of course, blowing out the candles)!
